Works well
  • Strong contrast between light and dark
  • A clear subject on a simple background
  • Portraits lit from the side or by a window
  • Silhouettes, shadows, shapes and architecture
  • Plants, flowers and landscapes with clear layers
  • Black and white or low-colour photos
  • Bold text, logos and line drawings (use Silhouette)
  • Sharp, high resolution images (1000 px or more)
Works poorly
  • Very colourful photos: colours of similar brightness turn into the same blue
  • Subject and background of similar brightness, like a red flower on green leaves
  • Flat, foggy or low-contrast images
  • Very dark, night or washed-out bright photos
  • Busy scenes with lots of small detail
  • Soft gradients and fine textures, especially on fabric
  • Small text and thin lines
  • Blurry or low resolution pictures
  • Colour portraits in flat light: faces look grey and blocked up
